Pinecrest Lake to Emigrant Wilderness Road — Stanislaus High Country Circuit

Sierra granite at 8,000 feet. No crowds.

Moderate

Most people stop at Pinecrest Lake and call it a day. The overlanders keep going. From the Pinecrest trailhead area, the route climbs north and east on Forest Service roads into the Stanislaus backcountry, threading through lodgepole pine and granite toward the Emigrant Wilderness boundary. You’re rolling through country that saw Gold Rush mule trains and early logging operations — the old Dodge Ridge corridor still carries that weight. Dodge Ridge Road feeds into FS 5N01 and its spurs, delivering big views over the Tuolumne River drainage and access to dispersed camping on granite slabs that would cost you $400 a night if some glamping outfit got hold of them.

High clearance is mandatory — some of these spurs throw embedded granite steps and loose shale that’ll bottom a short-wheelbase truck if you’re not paying attention. Lockers help but aren’t required if you’re a competent driver. Best window is late June through October; snow can linger past Memorial Day at elevation. Fuel up in Sonora before you head up — there’s nothing past the lake. Cell service evaporates once you clear the resort area. Permits not required for dispersed camping outside wilderness boundaries, but the Wilderness itself is foot-traffic only.
