Calaveras Big Trees State Park
This state park protects two magnificent groves of giant sequoias, including the site where the first sequoia was ‘discovered’ by Europeans in 1852. The North Grove features an easy 1-mile loop trail through towering giants, while the more remote South Grove requires a 5-mile hike. The park includes developed camping with full amenities, making it a comfortable base for exploring the area’s sequoia forests.
Located along Highway 4 about 15 miles northeast of Angels Camp, it’s easily accessible year-round though snow can affect upper elevations in winter. The campground includes 129 sites with restrooms, showers, and a visitor center. Popular with families and RV travelers, reservations are recommended for summer weekends.
