Ebbetts Pass

Point of Interest

One of California’s most scenic mountain passes, Ebbetts Pass crosses the Sierra Nevada crest at 8,730 feet with sweeping views of the Carson Valley to the east and Mokelumne River drainage to the west. The pass features a large parking area, interpretive signs about the historic emigrant route, and direct access to the Pacific Crest Trail. It’s a popular stop for motorcyclists and sports car enthusiasts tackling Highway 4’s curves.

The pass is typically closed by snow from November through late May, making it a seasonal destination. Strong winds are common, especially in afternoon. No facilities beyond parking and trail access, but the views make it worth the stop for photos and leg-stretching.
