Siskiyou Crest Trail 4×4

High-country ridge runner through Siskiyou wilderness

Difficult

The Siskiyou Crest Trail runs the spine between Oregon and California, connecting a network of abandoned fire lookouts and mining claims scattered across 6,000-foot ridgetops. Starting near Oregon Caves National Monument, the route follows Forest Service roads through Port Orford cedar groves that somehow survived both logging and disease, climbing past the concrete foundations of Grayback Mountain’s demolished lookout tower. The technical highlight comes at Devils Punchbowl, where loose shale and narrow shelf roads demand precise wheel placement above thousand-foot drop-offs.

This is difficult terrain requiring experienced drivers and capable rigs with good ground clearance, recovery points, and backup plans. The Siskiyou Range creates its own weather, and summer thunderstorms can turn dusty roads into greasy nightmares within minutes. No permits needed, but carry extra fuel — the nearest gas sits 40 miles away in Cave Junction. Best conditions run late June through October when snow clears the high passes and fire restrictions lift.
