White Pocket Road

Deep sand gauntlet to surreal swirled sandstone

Difficult

This punishing sand track leads to some of the most otherworldly geology on Earth – the brain-like white and red swirled sandstone formations of White Pocket, where 190-million-year-old Jurassic dunes were carved and polished by eons of wind and water. The route starts innocuous enough from House Rock Valley Road, but quickly degenerates into deep sand washes that’ll bog down anything without proper technique and tire pressure. The final approach requires threading between towering sandstone fins where one miscalculation means expensive extraction or a very long walk back to cell service.

Aired-down tires and sand recovery gear are non-negotiable, with many seasoned desert runners still getting humbled by the sugar-fine sand that can trap a rig in seconds. High-clearance 4WD minimum, though a lifted truck with aggressive tires makes life considerably easier. Spring and fall provide the best conditions, while summer heat can be lethal and winter weather makes the sand even trickier. No permits needed, but this is serious backcountry where self-reliance isn’t optional. The reward is having some of the planet’s most photogenic geology essentially to yourself.
