Gunsight Butte Road to Lee’s Ferry — Marble Canyon Rim to Colorado River via House Rock Valley
The only road to the top of the Grand Canyon's river.
Lee’s Ferry is the only land access point to the Colorado River for 750 miles between Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon’s South Rim — every commercial river trip through the Canyon launches from this sandbar. The road in follows House Rock Valley south from US-89A, running through open sage and rabbit brush beneath the towering face of the Vermilion Cliffs, home to the California condor reintroduction program. Cliff Dwellers Lodge marks the turnoff; from there it’s 14 miles of improved dirt to the river, with Gunsight Butte and Cathedral Wash as notable landmarks along the descent. Cathedral Wash offers a short, rocky scramble to the river for those who want to stretch their legs mid-route.
The road itself is accessible to most high-clearance vehicles in dry conditions and is occasionally graded by the county. Rain turns the clay sections slick fast — check weather before committing. No 4WD required in good conditions, but it’s an isolated stretch with no services. Lee’s Ferry Campground sits right at the river and requires a reservation through Recreation.gov. The area gets busy in rafting season; come in late fall or winter for solitude and the best light on those red canyon walls.

Can a stock Tacoma or 4Runner handle Gunsight Butte Road without any lift?
Yes. The trail is graded dirt and gravel with only 300 feet of elevation change — a stock high-clearance truck or SUV handles it fine in dry conditions. Low-range isn't required, but don't attempt it in a sedan or low-clearance crossover.
Is this road passable in summer, or does the heat make it a bad idea?
Technically open year-round, but summer temps in House Rock Valley regularly hit 105°F+, and Lee's Ferry offers zero shade. Best season is October through April — the trail itself won't stop you, but the heat will make you miserable and can be dangerous if something goes wrong remotely.
Do you need a permit or pay any fees to drive this road and reach Lee's Ferry?
No permit needed to drive Gunsight Butte Road. Lee's Ferry falls inside Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, so the standard NRA entry fee applies ($30/vehicle as of 2024). America the Beautiful pass covers it.
What's the hardest part of the route — is there anything that catches people off guard?
Nothing technical. The most disorienting part is navigating through House Rock Valley where tracks branch off with no signage — it's easy to drift onto a wrong two-track if you're not watching GPS. The road into Lee's Ferry at the end drops sharply toward the river and gets sandy near the launch ramp.
Is there reliable water or gas near the trailhead, and how far is the nearest fuel?
Marble Canyon, AZ has a small store and gas at Marble Canyon Lodge — fill up there before heading out. There is zero cell service on the route. Potable water is available at Lee's Ferry Campground at the end, but carry your own supply for the drive.
