Rogue River Backcountry Byway
Oregon's wild river backcountry route
The Rogue River Backcountry Byway traces Oregon’s most famous wild river through the heart of the Siskiyou Mountains, connecting Merlin to Illahee on 95 miles of mostly gravel Forest Service roads. This route parallels the designated Wild and Scenic Rogue River through country where Zane Grey wrote his fishing tales and prospectors scratched for gold in every creek. Key landmarks include Grave Creek Rapids (the put-in for multi-day river trips) and historic Winkle Bar, where stone foundations mark 1890s mining camps.
Moderate difficulty suitable for any high-clearance vehicle, though 4WD recommended during winter months. Road surface ranges from good gravel to rutted dirt with several creek crossings that can be challenging during spring snowmelt. Open year-round but best April through October. No permits required. Dispersed camping available throughout but bring water — river access requires hiking in most areas. This is classic Southern Oregon backcountry where you’ll encounter more black bears than other vehicles.
