Rogue River National Forest Galice to Grave Creek Road
Historic mining road above legendary whitewater
This backcountry mining road shadows the legendary Rogue River through the heart of Oregon’s most notorious whitewater canyon. You’ll cross Galice Creek multiple times while rocky shelves drop away to reveal Grave Creek Rapids and Rainie Falls thundering 200 feet below. The route passes abandoned mining claims from the 1850s gold rush, including the skeletal remains of Winkle Bar’s hydraulic mining operation that once moved mountains of gravel.
Moderate difficulty requires high-clearance 4WD for loose rock sections and three creek fords that can run knee-deep in spring. Best tackled June through October when water levels drop and the Forest Service maintains seasonal access. No permits needed but fuel up in Grants Pass—it’s 45 miles of nothing out there. You’ll earn killer riverside camping spots and front-row seats to some of the most technical whitewater in the Pacific Northwest.
