Anahim Lake to Tweedsmuir Park South Boundary Road

Grizzly country. No services. No shortcuts.

Expert

Starting from Anahim Lake on Highway 20, this route follows the southern boundary of Tweedsmuir Provincial Park through classic Chilcotin plateau terrain — vast lodgepole stands, open wetlands thick with moose and bear, and river crossings that change character entirely between June snowmelt and August low water. The Dean River crossing is the crux: a braided glacial river that’s beautiful and completely manageable at low water but turns into a legitimate obstacle in early season. Beyond that, the track winds through remote ranching country before the road deteriorates to a two-track that demands your full attention. You are genuinely far from help out here — plan accordingly.

This is an overland route that rewards experience over horsepower. High-clearance 4WD is the minimum; a second vehicle and recovery gear are strongly recommended. The isolation alone bumps this into the serious category — mechanical failure here means a very long wait. Best run late July through September when water levels are down. Anahim Lake has fuel and a small general store — it’s the last resupply in either direction. No permits required. Expect zero cell service for the majority of the route; a satellite communicator is not optional, it’s essential.
