Heckman Pass Historic Mining Road

Coast Mountains silver rush meets serious rock crawling

Difficult

The old mining road to Heckman Pass cuts through some of the most unforgiving terrain in the Coast Mountains, climbing from sea level to 5,200 feet through a series of hairpin switchbacks that’ll test your rig’s cooling system. Originally carved by miners chasing silver veins in the early 1900s, this route passes abandoned stamp mills and mine shafts before reaching the pass itself, where glacier-fed waterfalls cascade down granite walls. The final approach to Heckman Pass involves navigating loose scree fields and water bars that can surprise even seasoned drivers.

This is serious 4×4 territory requiring low-range, skid plates, and aggressive tires — stock rigs will struggle with the steep grades and rock gardens. Best tackled July through September when snow clears the upper elevations, though creek crossings can swell dangerously during heavy rains. Fuel up in Bella Coola and carry extra water; the nearest services are hours away. What you get is solitude among peaks that scrape the sky and the satisfaction of completing one of BC’s most challenging mountain passes.
