Cottonwood Canyon Technical Challenge
Slot canyon hell for expert drivers only
Cottonwood Canyon cuts a technical line through the Muddy Mountains, dropping 1,400 feet through progressively narrower sandstone slots that require precise wheel placement and constant communication with your spotter. The route starts innocently enough as a wide wash but quickly constricts into passages barely wider than a full-size pickup, with several mandatory winch points where vehicles must be pulled up or lowered down near-vertical rock steps. The infamous “Washing Machine” section involves threading between house-sized boulders with inches of clearance on both sides.
This is strict expert territory requiring full underbody protection, front and rear winches, and recovery gear for multiple vehicles. Winter and spring offer the best conditions when flash flood danger is lowest, but even then this canyon can become a death trap in minutes during storms. A BLM permit may be required for organized groups, and solo attempts are strongly discouraged. You’ll need a minimum 2-vehicle convoy with experienced drivers and recovery equipment. The payoff is conquering one of Nevada’s most technical slot canyon challenges, with stunning geological formations that few people ever see.
