Nellis Dunes Recreation Area Loop

Vegas desert sandbox with military flyovers

Moderate

The Nellis Dunes sit in a strange pocket of public land where military jets scream overhead while dune buggies carve lines in the sand below. This 10,000-acre OHV area offers everything from gentle rolling hills for beginners to steep faces that’ll test your sand driving skills and your nerve. The main loop connects several distinct dune systems, with Crash Hill being the proving ground where locals separate the posers from the players.

Easy to moderate difficulty depending on your line choice, but the sand demands proper technique and tire pressure drops to 12-15 PSI. Any 4WD will handle the main routes, though true sand performance requires paddles or aggressive all-terrains. Best ridden October through April when temps drop below furnace levels. No permits needed, but bring extra water, recovery gear, and respect for the military operations overhead. You’ll get pure desert playground access just 45 minutes from the Strip.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock Jeep Wrangler handle Nellis Dunes or do I need sand modifications?

A stock 4WD vehicle can handle it, but airing down to 15-18 PSI is essential to avoid getting stuck in the soft sand. Experienced sand drivers will have more fun, but it's doable for beginners who take their time.

Is Nellis Dunes open year-round or does the military close it during training?

The recreation area stays open year-round, though you'll hear and see military aircraft overhead regularly. Summer temperatures exceed 110°F, making October through April the only comfortable months to visit.

Do I need any permits or pay fees to access Nellis Dunes?

No permits or fees required - it's free BLM land. Just follow Leave No Trace principles and stay within the designated recreation area boundaries.

What's the most challenging part of this loop for someone new to sand driving?

The steeper dune faces on the north side of the loop where loose sand can trap inexperienced drivers. If you start getting stuck, don't gun it - back out and try a different line or air down further.

Can I camp overnight at Nellis Dunes and is there cell service for emergencies?

Dispersed camping is allowed throughout the area with decent cell coverage since you're close to Vegas. Bring extra water and shade - there are no facilities and temperatures drop significantly at night in winter.
