At 1.6 million acres, this is the granddaddy of desert refuges — bigger than Yellowstone and mostly empty. Established to protect desert bighorn sheep, but you’ll find dispersed camping opportunities throughout the vast backcountry. Rough dirt roads lead to isolated spots with massive views across the Mojave. No facilities, no water, no crowds — just you and the desert bighorn country.
Access via Corn Creek Road or various backcountry routes requiring high-clearance 4WD. Some areas may be restricted during lambing season (January-June). Bring everything you need including water. Cell service is nonexistent once you’re away from the main roads. Summer’s deadly hot — stick to cooler months.
