Buccaneer Trail
Sonoran Desert's slickrock technical challenge
The Buccaneer Trail cuts a technical path through Arizona’s Sonoran Desert west of Phoenix, where red sandstone slickrock creates natural obstacles that’ll test your line choice and nerve. This 12-mile loop weaves between towering saguaros and granite outcrops, culminating in the notorious Rock Garden — a boulder field that sorts the confident from the cocky. The trail’s signature challenge comes at Devil’s Staircase, where precise wheel placement on sculpted sandstone ledges separates recovery from progression.
Rated difficult to expert depending on your chosen lines, this trail demands high clearance, skid plates, and aggressive tread. Winter through early spring offers perfect conditions — summer heat makes this a literal death trap. No permits required, but bring plenty of water, recovery gear, and respect for the desert’s unforgiving nature. You’ll exit with new appreciation for desert technical driving and maybe some fresh pinstripes from aggressive ocotillo.
