Palo Pinto Mountains Lost Creek Technical Loop

Limestone ledges and creek crossings in the Cross Timbers

Difficult

The Palo Pinto Mountains rise abruptly from the Cross Timbers, all limestone shelves and sudden draws that catch you off guard. This technical loop follows old ranch roads and creek bottoms through private land that’s been opened to recreational access, threading between mesquite thickets and post oak mottes. Lost Creek runs year-round here, cutting through solid limestone to create natural steps and pools — you’ll cross it nine times, some requiring careful line choice through basketball-sized rocks.

Difficult rating earned through repeated rock ledge climbs and technical creek crossings that’ll test your spotter skills. Modified 4WD with skid plates and all-terrain tires minimum; lockers help but aren’t required. Spring offers wildflowers but muddy conditions; fall through winter provides the best traction. No permits needed but respect private land boundaries. What you get is classic Texas hill country wheeling without the crowds, plus some of the clearest spring water you’ll find in north-central Texas.
