Laguna Hanson Forest Loop
Pine forest refuge in Baja's high country.
Laguna Hanson sits at 5,200 feet in Baja’s Parque Nacional Constitución de 1857, surrounded by the largest pine forest on the peninsula. The 25-mile loop trail circles this seasonal lake through stands of Ponderosa pine and oak, following old cattle trails and fire roads that date back to the 1800s logging era. The challenging section comes on the eastern approach via Cañon Tule, where loose granite and steep grades test your line choice and throttle control as you climb 1,500 feet in three miles.
Difficult rating due to the technical climbs and rocky surfaces that demand good ground clearance and aggressive tires. Modified 4WD recommended, though experienced drivers in stock rigs can manage with careful spotting. Open year-round but snow possible December through February at elevation. Park entry fee required. Bring firewood — collecting in the national park is prohibited. The reward is lakeside camping under towering pines with stellar dark skies, a rare treat in Baja’s desert landscape.
