The Richtersveld is the only hot desert wilderness left in South Africa, and the roads through it are exactly what you’d expect from a place that resisted human settlement for good reason. The circuit from the Kokerboom Flats south to Sendelingsdrift on the Orange River and back via Hellskloof Pass links the park’s two most punishing arteries — corrugated sand tracks that buckle into loose shale pitches, boulder-strewn dry river crossings, and exposed ridgeline traverses above the Orange River gorge. Sendelingsdrift is the border crossing into Namibia via pontoon ferry; crossing is a highlight even if you’re not going through. The quiver tree (kokerboom) forests near the northern entry are legitimately otherworldly.
This is a genuine expert-level route. Sharp quartzite rock destroys tyres at a rate that will humble experienced crews — run maximum-ply off-road rubber and carry at least two full-size spares per vehicle. Minimum two vehicles required by park rules; three is smarter. No fuel inside the park; fill in Springbok (210 km away) or Port Nolloth. Water is scarce — carry all you need. The park operates a permit system through SANParks; book accommodation at Potjiespram or die-hard campsites well in advance for school holidays. Best April to September when temperatures drop below scorching.

What kind of 4x4 do you actually need for the Richtersveld Canyon Rim Circuit?
A capable 4x4 with front and rear lockers is non-negotiable. Heavy-duty tyres rated for sharp quartzite are essential — this terrain will shred standard all-terrains. A lifted stock 4Runner is marginal; an equipped Land Cruiser, Defender, or equivalent is the baseline.
When is this trail open, and what makes summer a bad idea?
April through September is the window — spring through early spring. Summer (October–March) brings extreme heat that regularly pushes past 50°C in the canyon, making it genuinely dangerous for both vehicle and crew. Do not attempt in summer.
Do you need a permit, and can you just rock up to the gate?
Yes, a SANParks permit is required to enter Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park — book through SANParks in advance. Walk-ins are possible but park entry and camp bookings fill up, especially over South African public holidays. Sort it before you leave Springbok.
What's the hardest section on this circuit and what should I expect?
The quartzite ridge crossings between Kokerboom and the canyon rim are the crux — loose, razor-sharp rock on steep off-camber shelves with minimal recovery room and no bail-out. A single mechanical failure here without a second vehicle means a very long wait for help that may not come quickly. Two-vehicle minimum is a rule, not a suggestion.
Is there any water on the trail, and how much fuel do I need out of Springbok?
There are Orange River crossing points and some seasonal water sources, but none are reliable for drinking without treatment — carry your full water supply for the duration. Fuel capacity for the full 140 km circuit plus the drive from Springbok (~200 km one way) means you need a minimum 80-litre reserve; there is no fuel inside the park.
