Richtersveld National Park — Orange River Canyon Rim Dispersed Camp near Sendelingsdrift
This is proper wilderness camping inside SANParks-managed Richtersveld National Park along the Orange River canyon rim south of Sendelingsdrift. The landscape is brutal and beautiful — quartz and schist ridges dropping into the gorge, halfmens succulents on the slopes, and the slow green ribbon of the Orange River below. You’ll need a permit from SANParks before you roll in. No facilities, no shade structures — just the rock and sky. Bring every drop of water you need; the river is below and access is rough. Capacity is self-regulated; leave gaps between rigs. Fires are prohibited inside the park — gas stoves only.
Access from Sendelingsdrift is on rough 4WD tracks across rocky desert terrain — low range is standard kit here. The park gates at Sendelingsdrift control entry. Best season is April through September; summer temps in this canyon country are savage and can exceed 50°C. A SANParks permit and valid 4WD are non-negotiable. Fees are handled at Sendelingsdrift or via SANParks online.
