Helskloof Pass — Richtersveld Canyon Rim Descent Viewpoint

Helskloof Pass is the real deal. This narrow, rocky descent drops off the Richtersveld plateau into a scorched canyon landscape that looks like it belongs on another planet. The views from the top take in the Orange River corridor and the raw, folded quartzite ridges of the Richtersveld — one of the most geologically ancient landscapes on Earth. This is the southern terminus of the Richtersveld 4×4 trail and a mandatory waypoint for anyone running the park. The road surface is loose rock and embedded boulders — low-range territory, no debate.

Access is through Richtersveld National Park (entry fees apply, SANParks). Best tackled mid-morning when the rock has warmed up and you can see your line clearly. Summer heat here is punishing — May to September is the window. No water, no shade at the pass itself. Self-sufficient rigs only.
