Route des Grandes Alpes

France's ultimate Alpine challenge route

Difficult

The Route des Grandes Alpes is France’s ultimate mountain driving challenge, threading 684 kilometers through the heart of the French Alps via 16 major mountain passes including the notorious Col de l’Iseran at 2,764 meters. This historic route follows ancient Roman roads and military paths, connecting Lake Geneva to Nice while crossing some of Europe’s most demanding high-altitude terrain. The real test comes at passes like Col du Galibier and Col de la Bonette, where narrow switchbacks, rockfall zones, and sudden weather changes separate casual tourists from serious mountain drivers.

Rated Difficult due to elevation, exposure, and technical sections requiring high-clearance vehicles with strong brakes and reliable cooling systems. Summer-only access (June-October) as snow closes most high passes the rest of the year. Fuel strategically as stations are sparse in remote valleys, and carry emergency gear for rapid weather changes above treeline. This route delivers unmatched Alpine scenery, historic military fortifications, and the satisfaction of conquering Europe’s most celebrated mountain road network.
