Champagne to Hutshi Lakes Road — Southern Lakes Mining Circuit

First Nations corridors and silent lake trout country.

Moderate

The Champagne and Aishihik First Nations have traveled this corridor for generations, and traces of that history surface along the entire route in the form of old camp sites, fish weirs, and the occasional hand-hewn cabin frame going silver-grey in the Yukon sun. The track leaves the Alaska Highway near the Champagne settlement — a tiny roadside community with real character — and pushes northeast across rolling boreal terrain, passing Hutshi Chief Mountain before descending to the Hutshi Lakes chain. Soft ground in the lowland sections will swallow an unprepared rig in wet years; pick your lines carefully and probe before committing. Hutshi Lakes hold lake trout and the kind of silence that reminds you why you started overlanding.

Rated moderate in dry conditions, difficult in wet — a lifted truck with mud tires handles this route without too much drama in August. The soft clay sections near the lake shore are the most serious obstacle; airing down to 18–20 psi and carrying traction boards is smart insurance. Fuel in Haines Junction before departing. No maintained camping infrastructure at the lakes — flat ground and dispersed sites exist, but pack out everything. Best season is July through early September. No permit required. Cell service ends at Champagne and doesn’t come back until you return.
