Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta Eastern Circuit
Eastern approach to Colombia's coastal peaks
The eastern approach to the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta takes you through territories most overlanders never see — past Arhuaco villages where ancient agricultural terraces still feed families and cloud forests thick enough to lose GPS signal for hours. Starting from Valledupar, this route climbs through the Río Cesar valley before turning into the mountains via rough tracks that wind through indigenous reservations. The climb from tropical lowlands to páramo happens fast here, with the notorious La Cuchilla pass demanding low-range and good tires as you navigate loose rock switchbacks at 3,200 meters.
This is moderate to difficult terrain requiring high-clearance 4WD, recovery gear, and respect for indigenous protocols — some areas require permission to transit. Best tackled March through May or September through November when streams are manageable. Fuel up in Valledupar and carry water for three days. What you get is access to Colombia’s highest peaks from the quiet side, camping spots with views across the Caribbean coast, and conversations with communities who’ve been reading these mountains longer than most countries have existed.
