Reserva Provincial Laguna Blanca Flamingo Circuit

Neuquén flamingo gathering remote circuit

Moderate

Laguna Blanca sits in the middle of nowhere on the Neuquén plateau, a salt lake that hosts the largest flamingo concentration in northern Patagonia during breeding season. The circuit starts from Zapala and heads west through Estancia territory, where guanaco and rhea roam between volcanic mesas. The approach to Laguna Blanca reveals thousands of Chilean, Andean, and James flamingos turning the water pink against a backdrop of black basalt cliffs. The loop continues around smaller saline lakes like Laguna Verde, each with different mineral compositions that attract different bird species.

Easy to moderate difficulty—the roads are rough ranch tracks but manageable for most vehicles with decent clearance. Watch for washouts after rain and deep sand in some sections. No services exist for 200 kilometers in any direction, so carry extra fuel, water, and food. Best visited October through March when flamingos are nesting and roads are most accessible. This delivers serious solitude and world-class wildlife viewing without the crowds of more famous Patagonian destinations.
