The Izu Peninsula juts south into the Pacific and its central ridge roads are some of the most underrated 4×4 terrain in the Kanto and Tokai regions. The Nishi-Izu forest road system links the spine from near Shuzenji south toward Matsuzaki, passing through dense cedar plantation and secondary forest with periodic clearings that open up to views across Suruga Bay toward Fuji on a clean day. The descent toward the western coastline involves loose shale and eroded clay sections that get genuinely slippery after rain — more than one overconfident street-tire SUV has gotten itself sideways here and needed extraction.
This is intermediate-to-difficult terrain depending on recent weather and where exactly you push into the network. Stock 4WD with all-terrain tires handles the main track; the deeper side spurs demand lockers and confidence. The roads fall under Shizuoka Prefecture forestry jurisdiction and sections close seasonally or after storm damage — the forestry office in Shimoda is your best call before departure. Best season is April through June and again October through November, avoiding typhoon season and summer humidity that accelerates erosion. Fuel in Shuzenji or Matsuzaki. No services on route. Camping is possible at forest clearings but check local restrictions.

Can a stock Land Cruiser or 4Runner run this without modifications?
A stock high-clearance 4WD with all-terrain tires is the minimum — think Land Cruiser 70/80, 4Runner, Jimny, or similar. A lifted crossover or AWD sedan will get you stuck or damaged on the rock sections mid-route.
When does the trail close, and is snow a real concern?
Stick to April–June and October–November. Winter brings snow and ice above 2,500 ft that makes sections genuinely dangerous, and summer typhoon season churns the dirt into a mess of washouts and downed timber.
Do I need a permit to drive the Nishi-Izu Skyline Forest Road?

What's the hardest section and what should I actually expect?
The tightest technical stretch hits mid-route where exposed rock shelves and narrow singletrack force slow, deliberate wheel placement — one wrong line and you're high-centered with nobody around. Expect some off-camber moves and tight tree-lined switchbacks that punish wide wheelbase rigs.
How far is the nearest fuel stop, and is there water on trail?
Shuzenji is your last reliable fuel and resupply before dropping in — top off there, because 35 miles of ridge driving burns more than you think. There's no guaranteed potable water on trail, so carry all you need for 1–2 days.
