Corkscrew Road
Cattle drive road through Florida's wildest swamp
Corkscrew Road cuts a narrow line through the heart of the Fakahatchee Strand State Preserve, following the route of old cattle drives and tram roads used to haul cypress logs in the early 1900s. This 12-mile dirt road becomes a muddy gauntlet during summer rains, with standing water that can trap vehicles for hours. The road passes the famous ghost orchid habitat and connects several primitive camping areas scattered through the preserve.
Moderate difficulty when dry, but expert-level during wet season (June-October) when sections flood knee-deep. High-clearance 4WD essential during summer, stock vehicles can make it in dry months. No permits required but check preserve hours and seasonal closures. Best tackled November through April when water levels drop and mosquitoes back off. This is old Florida at its wildest — expect gators, panthers, and solitude that cell towers can’t reach.
