Skyline Drive (Hirugano Highlands to Gujo)
Hida alpine dirt above the Gujo valley.
The Hirugano Highlands sit at roughly 900 meters above sea level in Gifu Prefecture, and the dirt and gravel forest roads stitching them to the Gujo valley below are the kind of thing Japanese 4×4 clubs have been running on long weekends for decades. The route threads through Hida-Shinshu quasi-national park territory, past beech and fir forests, with open highland views at the top before the track drops steeply into switchbacks above the Yoshida River. Watch the culvert crossings mid-route — after any rain they run fast and the stone edges are unforgiving on sidewalls.
This is accessible to most capable stock SUVs with high clearance and all-season tires, but mud season in early spring will punish anything without a locker. The forest roads here fall under Gifu Prefecture forestry administration and can close without much notice after typhoon damage — check with the local forestry office in Gujo before you go. Best window is late June through October before the first snow closes the upper sections. Fuel up in Gujo city; there is nothing on the route itself. Dispersed camping is possible at designated highland sites.

Frequently asked questions
Can a stock Land Cruiser or Jimny handle this trail without any mods?
Yes — stock 4WD with decent ground clearance is the stated minimum and will get you through. A lifted rig isn't required, but you'll want proper off-road tires since the dirt and gravel sections get loose and rutted, especially after rain.
What months is Skyline Drive actually passable, and does it close in winter?
June through October is the reliable window. Snow closes the high-altitude sections from late autumn and the road can stay buried well into spring — don't count on access before June without checking current conditions directly with Gifu Prefecture Forestry Administration.
Are there permits or fees required to drive this route?
No permit system is currently in place for general vehicle access on this forest road corridor. Check the Gifu Prefecture official site before you go, as forestry road regulations in Japan can change seasonally or after storm damage.
What's the hardest section and what should I actually be ready for?
The most demanding stretches are the narrow ridge-line segments where the road tightens, drops off on one side, and loose gravel makes braking sketchy on descent. There's no bailout for several kilometers through the worst of it — if you meet oncoming traffic, someone's reversing a long way.
Is there any reliable water source along the route, or do I need to carry everything from Gujo?
Water crossings exist on the trail but treating or filtering any source up here is non-negotiable. Load up in Gujo before you climb — there are no services on the 45km route itself, and that goes for fuel too, so top off your tank before you start.
