Provincial Road 280 — Gypsumville to Lake St. Martin Backcountry Corridor
Forgotten Interlake corridor to a lake nobody visits.
PR-280 doesn’t show up on most overlanding radar, which is exactly why it’s worth running. The route pushes west and north out of Gypsumville — a small Interlake community sitting on some of the only gypsum deposits in Manitoba — and traces through a flat, wide-open landscape of mixed aspen parkland, wetland, and scrub spruce that feels entirely different from the Canadian Shield runs further north. The road itself is maintained gravel that degrades significantly on the approaches to Lake St. Martin, narrowing and softening as you push toward the Anishinaabe community at road’s end. Side tracks split off into Crown land and provincial hunting areas, offering dispersed camping with genuine seclusion. Wildlife density in this corridor is exceptional — white-tailed deer, black bear, and moose are routine sightings.
This is a high-clearance run rather than a technical 4×4 challenge — the obstacles come from soft shoulders, seasonal mud, and the occasional washed-out culvert rather than rock or steep grades. A 4WD vehicle with all-terrain tires handles it comfortably outside of spring breakup, which renders sections impassable through April and into May some years. Fuel in Gypsumville; nothing beyond. No cell service past the junction. The route is most rewarding during fall — the aspen parkland turns gold and the hunting pressure keeps roads reasonably tracked. Respect the community at road’s end; this is private territory beyond the public road allowance.
