Forest Road 316 – Castle Mountain Loop
Castle Mountains mining heritage loop
Forest Road 316 creates a 26-mile loop through the Castle Mountains south of White Sulphur Springs, winding through a landscape that perfectly captures Montana’s transition from mountain forest to rolling grasslands. The route passes numerous abandoned mining claims from the late 1800s silver boom, including the remnants of Castle Town, where foundations and mine shafts still dot the hillsides. The western portion climbs through dense aspen groves and Douglas fir before opening into vast meadows where elk and deer are common, especially during dawn and dusk hours.
This is an easy to moderate route suitable for most high-clearance vehicles, though muddy conditions in spring and early summer can challenge traction. The gravel surface is generally well-maintained but includes some rocky sections and creek crossings that require attention. Accessible May through October, with peak conditions July through September. No permits required and excellent dispersed camping opportunities throughout the national forest. The Castle Mountains offer a perfect introduction to Montana backcountry driving – remote enough to feel isolated but forgiving enough for newer off-road enthusiasts. Cell service is spotty to nonexistent.
