Lewis and Clark National Forest — Judith River Upper Canyon Dispersed Camp

Pull off into the pines along the upper Judith River corridor on Forest Road 487 and you’ve got classic central Montana dispersed camping: Douglas fir and aspen, a running creek nearby for ambient noise (not drinking water — filter it), and zero crowds on most summer weekdays. The Judith Mountains frame the eastern horizon and you’re well clear of highway noise. No amenities, no signage pointing the way — just national forest land managed out of the Judith Ranger District in White Sulphur Springs. Standard 16-day stay limit applies.

Access via FR 487 off US-89 south of White Sulphur Springs. Road is gravel with some rough washboard sections — high-clearance 2WD is workable in dry conditions, 4WD recommended after rain. Check with the White Sulphur Springs Ranger District for current road status and fire restrictions before heading in. Cell signal is essentially nonexistent in the canyon bottom.
