Chain O’Lakes State Park
This 6,863-acre park sprawls across rolling hills and marsh country in far northern Illinois, with campgrounds scattered through oak-hickory forests overlooking a chain of natural lakes. The park’s three main camping areas offer everything from primitive sites to full hookups, with the Oak Point area being the most secluded and Honeysuckle Hollow the most developed. Spring through fall brings heavy use from Chicago-area campers, but midweek offers better solitude.
Access is straightforward via paved roads, though some interior camp loops are gravel. The park stays open year-round, but water is shut off in winter. Popular with bass anglers and waterfowl hunters, so expect company during fishing tournaments and hunting seasons.
