Moraine Hills State Park Kettle Loop

CCC roads through glacial kettle moraine terrain.

Moderate

The Kettle Loop at Moraine Hills follows old CCC roads built in the 1930s through some of Illinois’s most dramatic glacial terrain, where retreating ice sheets left behind a landscape of kettle lakes, rolling hills, and oak savannas. The route connects Lake Defiance, Tomahawk Lake, and several smaller kettles via maintenance roads originally constructed to access fire towers and work camps. The most challenging section crosses a seasonal wetland between Tomahawk Lake and the northern prairie restoration area, requiring careful navigation during spring snowmelt.

Moderate difficulty due to seasonal flooding and soft prairie soils that can bog down lighter vehicles. High-clearance 4WD recommended, especially April through June when snowmelt and spring rains turn the prairie sections into mud bogs. Fall colors are spectacular, and winter access is possible when frozen. No overnight camping within the park, but nearby Chain O’Lakes State Park offers developed sites. This route showcases Illinois’s glacial heritage better than most, with interpretive stops explaining the area’s 12,000-year history.
