Bighorn Basin Road — Death Valley to Eureka Valley via Hanging Rock Canyon

Death Valley's punishing northern secret.

Expert

Most people roll through Death Valley on pavement and call it done. Bighorn Basin Road doesn’t tolerate that kind of halfheartedness. Dropping off the Ubehebe Crater road system and threading north through Hanging Rock Canyon, this route cuts through some of the most geologically raw terrain in California — sharp basalt, tilted limestone, and washes that can swallow a tire to the axle without warning. The pull to Eureka Valley and its 680-foot singing sand dunes at the north end is the payoff, but the canyon narrows and embedded boulder fields in the middle section are the price of admission.

This is Expert-level terrain requiring a well-built short-wheelbase 4×4 with skid plates, a recovery kit, and a co-driver who knows what they’re doing. Lockers are strongly recommended. No water, no cell service, no rescue coming fast — fuel up in Lone Pine or Beatty, Nevada before committing. Best window is October through April; summer heat in this corridor is genuinely lethal. Dispersed camping is legal throughout. Pull permits for the Death Valley National Park fee at any entrance station.
