Yankee Fork Road
Gold rush relics and creek crossings in Idaho backcountry
The Yankee Fork Road carves through one of Idaho’s most storied mining districts, where dredge boats once tore through gravel bars hunting for gold. This remote route follows Yankee Fork Creek from Sunbeam up to Bonanza Ghost Town, passing massive tailings piles and the restored Yankee Fork Gold Dredge that sits frozen in time. The road crosses Jordan Creek multiple times, with rocky ledges and loose gravel testing your line choice on narrow shelf roads cut into canyon walls.
Moderate difficulty demands high-clearance 4WD for the creek crossings and rocky sections, though the route stays manageable for experienced drivers in stock vehicles. Summer through early fall offers the best conditions when creek levels drop and snow clears from higher elevations. No permits needed, but fuel up in Stanley—the nearest gas is 50+ miles away. Plan on dispersed camping along the creek, and pack extra water since creek water needs treatment. You’ll earn bragging rights on a genuine piece of Idaho mining history most folks never see.
