Yankee Fork Historic Mining District

Gold rush ghosts and mountain moonscapes

Difficult

The Yankee Fork drainage holds some of Idaho’s richest gold mining history, where hydraulic giants and massive dredges tore apart entire mountainsides chasing placer gold from the 1870s through the 1950s. This 32-mile route connects the ghost towns of Bonanza and Custer via Forest Service roads, passing the enormous Yankee Fork Gold Dredge and miles of tailings that look like moonscapes. The climb over Loon Creek Summit reaches 8,200 feet elevation and offers stunning views across the Frank Church Wilderness, while the descent into Custer requires careful navigation of loose rock and steep switchbacks.

Solid intermediate 4WD country requiring high-clearance and low-range capability for the summit crossing and technical descents. Rocky sections can be hard on tires, and weather above treeline changes fast. Best season runs July through September when high passes clear of snow. No permits needed, with excellent dispersed camping throughout the drainage. Bring recovery gear and extra fuel — nearest services are 50+ miles away in Stanley. You’ll witness firsthand how gold fever reshaped entire watersheds in pursuit of the precious metal.
