Sawtooth Lake Road
Alpine granite technical challenge
The granite spires of the Sawtooth Mountains tower above as you navigate this challenging high-country route that starts near Stanley and climbs toward Alice Lake. Originally carved by miners chasing silver deposits in the 1880s, this road demands respect with boulder fields, loose talus sections, and several creek crossings that can turn dangerous during snowmelt. The route passes through some of Idaho’s most photographed wilderness country before dead-ending at the wilderness boundary.
This is expert-level terrain requiring a built rig with armor, winch, and recovery gear. The final three miles are the technical crux with off-camber ledges and basketball-sized rocks. Best tackled July through September when snow clears the high passes. No permits needed, but respect wilderness boundaries. Dispersed camping available in national forest areas. You’ll earn views of jagged peaks that’ll make your Instagram followers hate you.
