Naukluft–Zebra River Canyon Track — Büllsport to Naukluft Camp via Zebra River Gorge

The Naukluft block sits in the heart of the Namib like a crumpled fist, and the farm track from Büllsport into the Zebra River canyon is how you get inside it. The route drops off the Tsaris Plateau through tight limestone switchbacks, threading into a canyon named for the water-polished striped rock walls that close in around you. The Zebra River itself — normally a dry sandy bed — forces a series of sandy wash crossings before you climb back out onto the Naukluft plateau and push north to the park campsite at Naukluft Camp on the Naukluft River. NamibRand borders the south; the Hardap Region stretches east in silence. You will see nothing man-made for hours.
This route is not for stock vehicles. Narrow canyon sections, off-camber limestone shelves, and deep sand river crossings demand a well-built short-wheelbase 4WD with skid plates and a high-lift jack. Long-wheelbase vehicles will struggle on the tightest canyon bends. The NWR permit for Naukluft Camp must be booked in advance through Namibia Wildlife Resorts — spaces are limited. Best season is April through October; January and February flash floods can make the canyon impassable and genuinely dangerous. Fuel from Maltahöhe or Solitaire — nothing in between. Cell service is zero. This is the kind of drive that reminds you why you built the truck.

Can a long-wheelbase Land Cruiser 200 or full-size truck run this trail?
No. The tight canyon switchbacks and boulder sections through Zebra River Gorge demand a short-wheelbase 4WD — a 200 Series, full-size truck, or long-wheelbase Defender will get hung up or be unable to navigate the turns. Modified short-wheelbase rigs with skid plates, a locker, and solid clearance are the minimum.
What months is this trail actually passable?
April through October is the reliable window — Namibia's dry season. The Naukluft gets flash floods during the November–March wet season that can make the gorge impassable and dangerous with no warning. Don't chance it in the rainy months.
Do you need a permit, and where do you get it?
Yes, a permit is required through Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) — book via nwr.com.na before you leave, not at the gate. The Büllsport farm entry may also require separate arrangement with the private landowner, so confirm both ends of access ahead of your trip.

The Zebra River Gorge canyon narrows are the crux — tight limestone walls, loose rock ledges, and steep off-camber descents where a mistake means no easy recovery. Expect to get out and spot multiple times, and budget serious time for a 38-mile route that can take a full day or more.
Is there any water or fuel between Büllsport and Naukluft Camp?
There is no fuel anywhere on this route — Maltahöhe is your last reliable fill-up, roughly 70km from the trailhead, so carry extra. Water crossings exist in the gorge but are not a drinking source without treatment; carry all your water for the duration as there are no services on trail.
