Namib-Naukluft National Park — Naukluft River Gorge Dispersed Camp
The Naukluft River gorge cuts through hard quartzite and dolomite ridges in the eastern reaches of the Namib-Naukluft National Park, and the sandy riverbed flats just below the gorge entrance offer one of the few legitimate dispersed overnight spots in this part of the park. Shade from camelthorn and shepherd’s tree, flat gravel and sand to set tyres on, and zero ambient light make this a serious overland sleep. NWR requires a permit for access — sort it at Sesriem or Maltahöhe before you head in. No facilities whatsoever: no pit toilet, no water, no firewood.
Access is via the D854 south of Maltahöhe toward Naukluft Camp. The last stretch is rough gravel and loose rock — high-clearance 4WD strongly advised, especially after summer rains when the riverbed can shift. Best visited April through October outside the heat and flash-flood window. Permit is per-vehicle, tied to your NWR booking. Stay limit is typically 14 days park-wide but confirm at gate.
Gorge riverbed camp, zero facilities, pure Namibia.
