Naukluft Mountains — Waterkloof Trail Canyon Viewpoint

The Waterkloof Trail kicks off from Naukluft Camp and drops you into a tight, shaded canyon carved through ancient dolomite and quartzite. The gorge walls press close, the Naukluft River runs through pools you can actually swim in when water levels cooperate, and the surrounding plateau views are everything you came to Namibia for. This is the same drainage system that feeds the broader Olive Trail circuit — if you’re running the full loop, this viewpoint marks your first real taste of what the mountains deliver.

Access is through NWR’s Naukluft gate near the camp — you need a valid NWR park pass. The trail itself is only open April through October due to flash flood risk in the gorge. The canyon section involves boulder scrambling and some chain-assisted climbs; it’s not a drive-up viewpoint. High-clearance is needed to reach the camp; the canyon is foot-travel from there.
