Zebra River Canyon — Naukluft Plateau Gorge Viewpoint

Zebra River Canyon cuts through the Naukluft Plateau southwest of Maltahöhe, its walls banded in alternating white, grey, and rust limestone that gives the place its name. This is the trailhead anchor for the multi-day Naukluft hiking trail and a genuine geological spectacle — tight narrows, seasonal water pools, and quartzite formations that glow orange in late afternoon. Access is through Namib-Naukluft National Park; a valid NWR entry permit is required before you roll past the gate. Overlanders running the Tsaris Pass corridor use this canyon as a primary orientation point before pushing west toward Sesriem or north toward Büllsport.

The access track from the C14/D854 junction is gravel and passable by high-clearance 2WD in dry conditions, but the Naukluft River bed crossings demand 4WD after any significant rain. Permit and booking through NWR Windhoek or online before departure — don’t assume walk-in availability, especially May through August.
