Sossusvlei Dead Vlei

Point of Interest

Dead Vlei is a white clay pan dotted with 900-year-old camel thorn trees, their black skeletons preserved by the desert’s extreme dryness. The contrast of white clay, black trees, and massive red sand dunes creates one of the most photographed landscapes in Africa. It’s a 1.2km walk from the 2WD parking area, or you can drive closer with 4WD in soft sand.

Access requires paying park fees at Sesriem Gate, then driving the tarred road to Sossusvlei parking. The last 5km to the vlei requires 4WD due to soft sand — shuttle service available. Best light is early morning or late afternoon when the dune colors intensify.
