Dune 45 — Sossusvlei Sunrise Viewpoint

Dune 45 sits roughly 45 kilometres from the Sesriem gate along the paved road into Sossusvlei, and it earns its reputation. The dune’s apricot-red crests glow against a cobalt sky at dawn in a way that makes it impossible to drive past. Climbers work up the spine for panoramic views across the Namib — the oldest desert on the planet. It’s a legit POI, not a gimmick, and the overlanding crowd rolls through here en route to Deadvlei and the salt pans beyond.

Access is inside the NamibRand / NWR fee zone — you need a valid Sossusvlei day entry or a Sesriem camp pass. Gates open at sunrise and close at sunset; no exceptions. High season runs May through September when temps are manageable. Summer months (Nov–Feb) hit 50°C on the sand surface — brutal and not recommended for a climb.
