Sesriem Canyon — Tsauchab River Slot Gorge and Naukluft Approach Landmark

Point of Interest

Sesriem Canyon sits just outside the Sesriem gate and cuts roughly a kilometre into layered Tsauchab River conglomerate, dropping 30 metres to the canyon floor. After good rains, a natural pothole at the canyon’s inner end holds permanent water — historically a lifeline for early travellers and still worth knowing about if you’re planning water strategy in this desert. The walls are tight, honeycombed, and photogenic in the early morning light. It’s a short walk from the road, but it reorients your sense of scale fast.

Access is straightforward from the C19 via the D826 into Sesriem. NWR permit required to enter the concession. Sesriem Canyon is the logical staging point before heading north into the Naukluft Mountains via Maltahöhe — overlanders running the Naukluft 4×4 trail often pass through this corridor. Best visited May through October; summer heat and flash flood risk in the gorge is real.
