Sossusvlei Red Dune Road — Sesriem to Dead Vlei via Elim Dune and Big Daddy
300-metre dunes. No second chances in soft sand.
The Namib-Naukluft road from Sesriem Gate to the Sossusvlei parking area runs 65 km of compacted gravel and soft sand through dunes that top 300 metres — the tallest in the world. The final 5 km from the 2WD parking area to the Dead Vlei pan is deep, churning apricot sand that swallows underpowered rigs whole. Big Daddy Dune rises just beyond the pan; the approach path through the vlei floor is disorienting at first light when the oryx are moving and the shadows of the dead camelthorns stretch forty metres across white clay. NamibRand and the wider Namib-Naukluft Park absorb the track on either side.
The soft-sand section demands low-range and aired-down tyres — 18 psi or less. A standard 4WD with decent clearance handles it, but ground clearance is more important than power here. Entry is strictly controlled through NamPark permits purchased at Sesriem; the gate opens at sunrise and closes at sunset. Water is sold at Sesriem Camp but carry extra — temps hit 45°C in summer. April through October is the sweet spot. This is not a technical trail, but it will expose any driver who has never done real desert sand.

Can a stock Land Cruiser or Defender handle the soft sand sections near Dead Vlei?
Yes, but you must air down to around 18-20 PSI for the final 5km of deep sand from the 2x4 parking area to Dead Vlei — that section is where unprepared rigs get buried. Low-range, momentum management, and a compressor to air back up are non-negotiable.
When is Sossusvlei closed or dangerous to drive?
The park is open year-round, but May through September is the window you want — cooler temps and firmer sand conditions. Summer months (November–March) push 45°C+ in the pan, sand gets looser, and heat-related vehicle failures are a real risk.

Is there any water available on the route, and how far is the nearest fuel from the trailhead?
No water on the route itself — carry everything you need. The nearest reliable fuel is at Solitaire, roughly 80km northwest of Sesriem, and at Maltahöhe to the east; tank up before you enter the park because there's nothing inside.
