Before GPS, Tuareg caravans navigated this crossing by the bones of camels buried along the trail — nature’s waypoints across the Erg du Ténéré, one of the most featureless and punishing deserts on earth. The route runs northeast from Agadez across the Grand Erg, passing the isolated oasis of Fachi roughly midway — a Kanouri salt-trading settlement rising out of the sand like a fever dream — before arriving at Bilma with its ancient salt works and date palms. There are no tracks in any meaningful sense; navigation is by compass bearing, GPS waypoint, and the occasional bleached landmark. Sand dunes reach 200 metres in the central erg, and the harmattan wind erases your traces within hours.
This is an Extreme-rated expedition route, not a day trip. Groups of at least two fully equipped vehicles are the absolute minimum; serious expeditions run three or more. Each vehicle needs 400+ litres of fuel, 200+ litres of water, full sand recovery gear, and satellite comms. The political situation in Niger’s Agadez Region has been volatile — verify security conditions thoroughly before committing. Historically, permits and military escort were required through the Agadez governorate. Best season is November through February when temperatures drop to survivable levels. This is one of the last true wilderness crossings left on the planet.

No stock vehicle is appropriate here. You need a purpose-built expedition 4WD with a long-range fuel tank (300L+ capacity minimum), reinforced suspension, sand ladders, dual spares, and a full recovery kit. Stock anything will leave you stranded in one of the most hostile deserts on earth.
When is the Ténéré actually drivable and what kills trips outside that window?
November through February is the only viable window. Summer heat regularly exceeds 50°C (122°F) and will cook engines, people, and fuel. Harmattan winds outside this window reduce visibility to near zero and can bury a vehicle in hours.
What permits and government requirements are needed before leaving Agadez?
You must register with the Gouvernorat d'Agadez and obtain authorization to travel the route — this typically involves a police and/or military escort requirement, which Nigerien authorities assign and which changes based on current security conditions. Travel advisories from your home government are not optional reading here; large portions of this region carry active 'Do Not Travel' designations from multiple Western governments.
What's the hardest section and what actually makes it dangerous?
The open Erg du Ténéré between Agadez and Fachi — roughly 250km of trackless dune sea with no landmarks, no trail markers, and navigation done by GPS, compass, and historic camel bone cairns. A navigational error or mechanical breakdown without a working recovery plan is a life-threatening situation, full stop. Two vehicles minimum is non-negotiable.
How do you handle fuel and water for 600km with nothing in between?
Fachi Oasis at roughly the midpoint offers limited water resupply — confirm current availability before departure, never count on it exclusively. Fuel does not exist between Agadez and Bilma; carry everything you need for 600km plus a 20% buffer for sand driving inefficiency, which can be brutal. Most serious expeditions carry 400L+ of fuel across the team.
