Aïr Massif — Timia Oasis Approach Wadi Dispersed Camp
The Aïr Massif north of Timia is one of the Sahara’s great surprises — black volcanic peaks, narrow wadi corridors, and the occasional acacia offering real shade. Overlanders running the piste south from Iférouane pull off along the sandy wadi floor where the track narrows before dropping into the Timia valley. No facilities, no signage, no other travelers most nights. Flat sand, natural wind shelter from the volcanic ridgeline, and an absolute riot of stars. Capacity is whatever you haul in — the wadi can hold multiple rigs spaced out with room to breathe.
Access is strictly 4WD, GPS, and ideally convoy. The piste is soft sand in places, rocky in others, and completely unsigned. The Aïr–Ténéré region requires a mandatory guide and all travel must be registered with authorities in Agadez before departure. Verify security conditions with the Direction du Tourisme in Agadez — this is not a casual tourist circuit. Carry all water and fuel for the complete loop; Timia has a small market but no reliable fuel. October–February is the only window worth considering.
