Piste du Tenere — Agadez to Bilma via the Erg du Ténéré and Fachi Oasis

The emptiest desert crossing on the planet.

Extreme

The tree of Ténéré used to be the loneliest tree in the world — the only landmark for hundreds of kilometres — before a Libyan truck driver hit it in 1973. Its metal replacement still stands near Fachi, and that tells you everything about driving the Ténéré: there are no landmarks, no roads, no track that lasts more than a sandstorm’s patience. From Agadez you head northeast across the Erg du Ténéré, navigating by GPS and the bleached bones of camels from the old trans-Saharan caravan route. Fachi oasis — a fortified Kanuri village rising from a salt flat — is the halfway point. Bilma’s salt mines at the end have been working for a thousand years and are still worked today by hand.

This is an Extreme-rated desert expedition. Minimum two fully-equipped vehicles — ideally three — with long-range fuel tanks (500+ km fuel range required), satellite communication, dual spare tyres, sand ladders, and a week’s water supply per vehicle. Navigation is GPS-only; tracks vanish in wind overnight. The route is geopolitically sensitive — check FCDO/State Department advisories before any planning; the region has historically been affected by armed group activity. When safe and politically stable, typically June is impossible (heat), best season is November to February. No permit from Niger’s tourism office has been consistently enforced in recent years but was historically required.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock Land Cruiser or lifted truck handle this route?

No. A stock vehicle will not survive the Ténéré. You need a purpose-built expedition 4WD with long-range fuel tanks (minimum 800km range), dual spare tires, a complete recovery kit (sand ladders, high-lift jack, snatch block), and satellite communication. Underprepared rigs have killed people out here.

What time of year can you actually drive the Piste du Ténéré?

November through February is the only realistic window. Summer heat regularly exceeds 50°C (122°F) and is fatal for both vehicles and humans. Even in the cool season, daytime temps can hit 35°C — nights drop sharply, so plan for both extremes.

Do you need permits and a guide to cross the Ténéré?

Yes on both counts. The Government of Niger requires registration with local authorities in Agadez before departure, and a licensed local guide is effectively mandatory — both legally and for survival. Without a guide who knows the piste, you will get lost; the route is unmarked sand for hundreds of kilometres.

What's the hardest section of the route and what makes it brutal?

The Erg du Ténéré itself — the open sand sea between Agadez and Fachi — is where expeditions fail. There is no defined track, dune fields shift constantly, and a single navigation error can leave you 50+ kilometres off route with no landmarks. Sustained soft-sand driving in this section will push fuel consumption well beyond any paved-road calculation.

Is there fuel, water, or resupply anywhere between Agadez and Bilma?

Fachi Oasis at roughly the midpoint is the only settlement and offers very limited water; do not count on fuel there. You must depart Agadez with everything you need for the full 600km crossing. Carry a minimum 20 litres of drinking water per person above vehicle requirements, and treat Fachi as an emergency top-up only, not a planned resupply.
