Forest Road 186 – Bull Trout Lake

Remote lake access with gnarly creek crossings

Moderate

Forest Road 186 cuts deep into the Payette National Forest’s backcountry, threading through dense timber and crossing multiple creeks before reaching Bull Trout Lake. The route starts near the town of Cascade and follows old logging roads that haven’t seen maintenance in years. You’ll encounter several water crossings, including a particularly gnarly ford at Hornet Creek that’s claimed more than a few oil pans. The final approach to the lake involves navigating through tight timber stands where scratches are guaranteed.

This is solid intermediate territory requiring high-clearance 4WD and skid plates. The creek crossings can be treacherous during spring runoff, making late summer through early fall the sweet spot for this run. No permits needed, but bring recovery gear and expect zero cell service once you’re beyond the first few miles. Multiple dispersed camping spots exist along the route and at the lake. The payoff is worth the beating your rig takes – Bull Trout Lake sits in a pristine granite bowl with some of the best backcountry fishing in Idaho.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of vehicle do I need for the creek crossings on Forest Road 186?

You need high-clearance 4WD with skid plates minimum. The creek crossings have rocky bottoms and can be knee-deep depending on snowmelt and recent rain.

Is Forest Road 186 open in early June or do I need to wait until July?

Wait until July. Snow blocks the higher sections until mid-to-late June, and creek crossings run dangerously high from snowmelt through early summer.

Do I need any permits to camp at Bull Trout Lake?

No permits required. This is dispersed camping in Payette National Forest, but follow Leave No Trace principles and camp at least 200 feet from the lake.

What's the gnarliest part of this trail?

The creek crossings about 12 miles in get sketchy with loose rocks and potential for high water. Take your time picking lines and don't attempt if water is running muddy from recent storms.

How much gas range do I need for the full 36-mile round trip?

Plan for at least 40 miles of range since you're running in 4WD low through tough terrain. Cascade is your last reliable fuel stop before hitting the trailhead.
