Oswegatchie River Sand Ridge Circuit

Technical sand crossing to Five Ponds Wilderness.

Difficult

This gnarly sand track follows the Oswegatchie River’s western shore deep into the heart of Adirondack wilderness, where soft sand meets exposed bedrock in wheel-grabbing combinations that’ll test your momentum and patience. Originally cut as a supply route to remote logging camps, the trail weaves through towering pines and crosses multiple tributaries before reaching the Five Ponds Wilderness boundary. The notorious Sand Lake crossing requires commitment — hit it wrong and you’re winching out of knee-deep muck while the blackflies feast.

Difficult terrain demands aired-down tires, recovery gear, and experience reading sand conditions. The 15-mile loop connects multiple primitive campsites along the river, but plan on a full day even with good conditions. Late summer offers the most stable sand, though water crossings can be tricky in drought years. No permits needed, but this is serious backcountry — closest services are 40 miles back in Star Lake. You’ll earn complete isolation and some of the finest brook trout water in the Northeast.
