Lake Marion Rim Road Technical Circuit
Technical ridge running above South Carolina's largest lake.
Lake Marion Rim Road traces the high ground around South Carolina’s largest lake, following old plantation boundaries and logging roads that date to the 1940s. The 14-mile circuit starts near Santee State Park and winds through steep ridges above the Santee Cooper reservoir system. Watch for the notorious “Clay Hill Climb” at mile 7 — a 200-yard ascent with loose clay over hardpan that becomes impassable when wet.
Difficult rating earned through technical climbs and narrow shelf roads with significant exposure. Locked differentials and good tires essential, recovery gear mandatory. Avoid completely during wet weather when clay sections become greased skating rinks. Best November through February when water table is low and foliage is down for better visibility. No permits required but check hunting seasons. Limited dispersed camping on ridgetops offers sunset views across 110,000-acre Lake Marion that make the technical challenges worthwhile.
