Sumter National Forest Hell Hole Swamp National Wildlife Refuge Perimeter Road

Swamp access through pristine bottomland hardwood.

Moderate

The Hell Hole Swamp perimeter road winds through 2,125 acres of some of South Carolina’s most pristine bottomland hardwood forest, following old logging roads that date back to the 1800s when cypress timber crews worked these black waters. The route circles the refuge boundary on raised limestone ridges, crossing multiple creek beds and seasonal wetlands before reaching the Francis Beidler Forest boardwalk connection. Key challenge comes at Goodson’s Creek crossing, where spring floods can make the ford impassable for weeks.

This is moderate-difficulty terrain requiring high-clearance 4WD and recovery gear—mud holes can swallow axles during wet seasons from November through April. Best accessed April through September when water levels drop and the road firms up. No permits required, but dispersed camping is prohibited within refuge boundaries. The payoff is access to some of the state’s last old-growth bald cypress stands and excellent wildlife viewing in complete solitude.
